Afternic is the marketplace behind most "this domain may be for sale" results at GoDaddy. The checkout is clean and payment plans are easy to get. The trade-offs: an offer can turn into a purchase, a lease keeps the name locked for years, and nothing on the listing shows backlinks. Here is what that means if you are buying a domain for SEO.

The short answer
Afternic is a legitimate GoDaddy-owned marketplace for buying domains that someone already owns. The seller pays a 15% to 30% commission, you pay the checkout price plus tax, and you have ten business days to pay. Fast Transfer names arrive instantly; Standard names can take ten business days. Lease to own spreads the price over up to 60 months but keeps the name locked. Afternic does not vet backlinks, so it suits brandable names better than a domain bought for its link profile.
If the reason you are buying is the backlinks, start where they are shown. These checked listings carry Domain Rating, referring domains, age and price in the open. The name is masked until you open an account.

Afternic sells names that are registered right now. Most belong to domain investors who list them with a Buy Now price, a minimum offer or both, and Afternic pushes those listings into the search results of GoDaddy and partner registrars. It says its listings show up in 125 million domain searches a month, which is why you so often meet an Afternic name while looking for something else.
That is a different shelf from expired domains. An investor name was usually registered to be resold, so many have never hosted a site and carry no links at all. Some are old names that once had a business behind them, and those can have a real link profile, but the listing will not tell you which kind you are looking at. There is no Domain Rating, no referring domain count and no history on the page.
If you are buying a brand, that does not matter much. You care about the word, the extension and the price. If you are buying for SEO, it is the whole question, and you have to answer it with your own tools before you send an offer. The expired side of the market works differently, with names coming up after the owner lets them lapse; the expired domain auction sites comparison covers where those are sold.
From Afternic's pricing page, its membership agreement revised in September 2026 and its Fast Transfer and lease to own pages. The right column is what each rule means when the money is yours.
| Rule | What Afternic says | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays the commission | The seller: 30% standard, 20% if the name used GoDaddy aftermarket nameservers, 15% to 25% on the Basic tier, $15 minimum | The seller loses up to a third of the price, so it is usually built into the Buy Now price you see. |
| Fees on the buyer | Any fees shown at checkout plus sales tax or VAT, which the agreement puts on the buyer | Check the checkout total, not the listing price. |
| When a deal binds you | An offer at or above Buy Now, an offer above the reserve that runs out, a Buy Now cut to your offer, or any completed step | An offer is not a free inquiry. If the seller drops the price to it, you have bought the name. |
| Time to pay | Full payment within ten business days | Long enough for a wire. Missing it leaves you liable for the price and collection costs. |
| Fast Transfer listings | The name moves to you instantly after payment | The best case. Only for .com, .net, .org, .io and six more, priced under $100,000, held 60+ days at a supported registrar. |
| Standard listings | The seller has ten business days after payment approval to hand the name over | Plan for up to two working weeks before you control DNS. |
| Lease to own | Monthly payments for up to 60 months, optional down payment, plus a service fee | You can point DNS at your site, but Afternic holds the name until the last payment. |
| Cancellation | Afternic can cancel, delay or reverse a transaction at its discretion | Rare in practice, mostly fraud checks, but the right is written in. |
| What is checked | The agreement says Afternic does not guarantee the quality, safety or legality of many listed names | Backlinks, history and trademarks are yours to verify. |
The listing does not always say which route a name is on. Ask before you pay if your launch date depends on it.

For a brand name, the price is the cost. For a name bought for its links, the checking is part of the cost, and on Afternic all of it is yours. Our checked listings right now are priced from $1,800 to $2,400 with Ahrefs DR from 42 to 51, and the backlink report is part of each listing.
| Cost | Afternic | SEODomain |
|---|---|---|
| Price of the name | Buy Now or a negotiated price, with the seller's 15% to 30% usually priced in | Fixed and shown on the listing |
| Taxes and fees | Whatever the checkout adds, plus sales tax where it applies | Membership plus the listed price |
| Backlink data to judge it | Your own SEO tool plan (Ahrefs Lite is $129/mo) | Ahrefs report included with membership |
| Spam and penalty checks | Not done by the marketplace | Done before the name is listed |
| Time to a usable name | Instant on Fast Transfer, up to ten business days on Standard, the full term on lease to own | Usually 24 to 48 hours after purchase |
| Paying over time | Lease to own, up to 60 months, name locked meanwhile | Not offered. You buy outright |
Membership is $24.50 a month billed yearly or $49 monthly, and one listing is revealed free when you open an account. Where Afternic is the better choice, the next section says so.
Afternic is a good place to do it. Wide inventory, GoDaddy checkout, and lease to own if the exact .com is out of reach today.
Fine, with one check. If the name is close to an existing brand, look at how UDRP panels and courts have handled similar disputes, for example with AI legal research in plain English, before you pay.
Poor fit. No link data on the listing, investor names that often never had a site, and a commission that inflates the price. Start from aged domains with the backlink report instead.
Run the name through the Wayback Machine and your backlink tool. Investor names often have no past; old business names may have spam.
Fast Transfer means instant. Standard can take ten business days after you pay. Lease to own means locked until the end.
An offer can bind you if the seller lowers the Buy Now price to it. Treat each one as a purchase.
Use the payment methods the checkout offers, then accept the transfer and confirm it when the name lands.
Comparing marketplaces? The Sedo review covers the other big resale market, with no buyer commission and offers that bind for seven days, and the GoDaddy expired domain auction review covers the names GoDaddy auctions after they lapse.
Yes. Afternic is a division of GoDaddy.com, LLC and has run a domain marketplace since 1999. Its listings appear in domain searches at GoDaddy and other registrars, and checkout runs through GoDaddy. Its Trustpilot score is 3.2 from about 440 reviews, and most complaints come from sellers about commissions and payout speed, not from buyers losing money.
The payment side is safe, because you pay GoDaddy and the seller is paid only once the transfer completes. What Afternic does not check is the name itself. Its own agreement says it does not guarantee the quality, safety or legality of many listed domains, so backlinks, past use and trademark conflicts are yours to check before you buy.
Afternic's commission of 15% to 30% is charged to the seller, not the buyer. As a buyer you pay the price at checkout, any fees shown there and applicable sales tax or VAT. Lease to own adds a service fee that covers renewals and administration during the term. Because sellers lose up to a third, the commission is usually priced in.
On a Fast Transfer listing the domain moves to your account right after payment. On a Standard listing the seller has ten business days after Afternic approves your payment to hand it over, so allow up to two working weeks. On lease to own you can use the name at once, but it is only transferred after the final payment.
You pick a term of up to 60 months, pay an optional down payment, and the price plus fees is split into monthly payments. You can point the domain at your site from the start, but Afternic controls it and keeps it locked until the last payment, then transfers it to you. It is available on names with a Buy Now price from $495.
Yes, on listings that accept offers, and Afternic's brokers can negotiate for you on names that are not listed. Be careful with offers. Under the membership agreement an offer becomes binding if the seller lowers the Buy Now price to it or if it meets the reserve when it expires, so only offer amounts you are ready to pay.
Legit, backed by GoDaddy, and one of the easiest ways to buy a brand name, especially on Fast Transfer or with a payment plan. It is a weak fit for a domain bought for its backlinks, because the listing shows none of them and the seller's commission sits in the price. For that, see what checked domains cost first, or compare every route in buy expired domains.
